Summer Term
Welcome Back for what is going to be an extremely eventful term!
The Summer Term is a pinnacle term for Year 6. It involves the children taking the National Tests and their final levels being submitted. It is, therefore, vital that the children remain focused for the duration of the year to ensure that they achieve their predicted levels. You have already received a timetable for dates when tests will be administered.
As such, the first half term will focus on developing and embedding test skills and revising the curriculum that the children have covered in lessons during Spring and Autumn Term. Science and Writing are teacher-assessed throughout the year.
Please see the 'KS2 Sats : A Parents' Guide' in our links below.
ENTERPRISE WEEK
Following SATs, there will be lots of really valuable learning throughout our highly popular Enterprise Week. The aims of the week are to expand understanding of economic wellbeing and to develop enterprise skills, such as: problem solving, financial awareness, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership, analytical skills and strategic thinking. Pupils will then plan their end of year trip with the money that they have earnt from the profits.
ENGLISH
In English, we continue to use a selection of quality texts to teach the key skills of spelling, grammar and punctuation. These quality texts are also used as models for our extended writing where we look closely at the style, technique and vocabulary choices of the author. When writing, children will be encouraged to identify their audience and plan their writing ensuring they use the correct formality, use appropriate grammar, select purposeful vocabulary for affect and ensure they use cohesive devices to connect ideas. They will evaluate their writing, learning to edit, and re-draft.
Ways to help your child-
•Choose a novel to read together (or listen to an audiobook) - even fluent readers can struggle with longer books.
•Use technology - downloads and apps could inspire reluctant readers to try new authors.
MATHS
This term we will be focusing on:
Ratio - introducing the language and symbol of ratio, moving on to scaled drawings and scale factors.
Algebra - using formulae and forming equations to help solve problems.
Decimals - continuing to divide and multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000 as well as rounding, adding and subtracting decimals.
Fractions, decimals and percentages - ordering and comparing as well as finding equivalents.
Area, perimeter and volume - area and perimeter of different types of triangle; volume of 3D shapes.
Statistics - reading, interpreting and drawing a range or line graphs and pie or bar graphs.
We will continue to send home maths homework each week, to consolidate the learning in class; this is to be returned by Friday and will be marked in class with the children.
How to help your child-
•Ensure your child is fluent in recalling all their x tables at speed up to 12 x 12 and that they also know the corresponding division
facts eg 8 x 6 = 48, 48 ÷ 6 = 8. They can log into TT Rockstars to help them practice their x tables in a fun and interactive way. Confidently being able to recall their x tables will also support them with fractions and spotting relationships. All the children have individual logins for Times Table Rockstar and Doodle Maths. We recommend that the children use these regularly at home as well as in school.
We will also be doing daily arithmetic practice and reasoning and problem solving.
SCIENCE
In the Healthy Bodies unit, children find out how to keep their bodies healthy. They will learn all about nutrition, the importance of exercise, their hearts and more. They will investigate how water and nutrients are transported in the circulatory system and recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on how their bodies function.
P.E.
This is timetabled for Tuesday and Friday afternoon and will be outside whenever possible.
Please ensure your child has a full P.E. kit in school, which they will keep on their peg. They will change in school, prior to the lesson.
This should consist of:
- black shorts (leggings/jogging bottoms for outside when the weather is cold)
- P.E. T-shirt
- plain black plimsols or trainers.
- please ensure long hair is tied back and jewellery removed or covered with tape.
We would also ask you to ensure the children have sun protection. Experts recommend that all children — no matter their skin tone — wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
SPORTS DAY - we have a provisional date planned but please be aware this is subject to change.
Wednesday 12th June.
LEAVERS' PERFORMANCE - dates for performances have yet to be timetabled. We will let you know as soon as we can.
Finally, we would like to thank you for your continued support. It is very much appreciated. After all, we are all working towards the same goal: to enhance the learning experience for your child.
Have a wonderful summer!
